How Much Time Should I Spend In San Marino?

San Marino city is quite small. You can easily see the highlights of the historic area in just a few hours. I think I spent 6-7 hours total in San Marino and felt like I saw all the highlights! You can see the city in a day trip from Florence to San Marino.

If one day seems overwhelming for this visit, I recommend staying for a night.

Where To Stay In San Marino

Staying within the historic city center will allow you to step back in time. Hotel Titano is located in the heart of San Marino’s historic district and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and Adriatic coast.

Each room features centralized heating and individually controlled air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and a flat-screen TV. You will also find bathrobes and slippers. Views include the medieval alleys, the historic center, or the Government Palace. La Terrazza is the hotel’s restaurant, which offers homemade, local dishes! The wellness center includes sauna, fitness center and Turkish bath and is set 656 feet from the main building.

Additionally, situated on top of Mount Titano is the Grand Hotel San Marino, which is more of a luxury accommodation option. The Grand Hotel’s panoramic terrace includes a hot tub and lounge chairs. The hall has a fireplace and offers breathtaking views. Amenities include a spa, fitness center, and outdoor pool, which would be amazing if you visit in the summer months!

Florence To San Marino Day Trip: What To Do

Tour The Three Tours

The number one recommendation I have for historic San Marino is to visit the Three Towers! Guaita, Cesta, and Montale are iconic symbols of San Marino and are ancient fortresses that sit on top of Mount Titano. Each tower offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and Adriatic coast. Plus, the short hike between the towers is a fun, free activity to enjoy the area.

From the historic center, follow the signs to the towers. The first one you’ll see is Guaita Tower, which is the oldest and most famous of the Three Towers. It’s located on the highest peak of the mountain. This is also an operating museum. You can purchase a ticket to visit either just this tower, or 2-3 of them. I got a combo ticket! Whether you choose to tour the interior of the fortress or not, definitely enjoy the overlook and take photos.

From here, I recommend continuing on to the second tower instead of heading right back into the city center. On the back side of the first tower on your way to the second, you’ll find the Instagrammable stone staircase… the perfect photo-op! Just be patient as other tourists complete the tower walk, but I definitely recommend taking some photos here.

The Cesta Tower houses the Museum of Ancient Weapons — a small museum that houses a collection of medieval weapons and armor. I toured this museum too and LOVED it. The weapons are cool, sure, but the real gem is the view from the top. From the top roof of this fortress, you’ll get a perfect view of the Guaita Tower in all her glory.

Pro-tip: This complete, private tour of San Marino will cover the towers PLUS the rest of the sights outlined below. I’ve never seen a private tour for this cheap… hop on it to save yourself time!

The third tower, Montale Tower, is located farther away from the other two, but still walkable. It took me about 10-15 minutes to hike to the third and final tower and the wooded path was very peaceful and beautiful. You aren’t allowed to enter or climb the third tower, but again, there is a great overlook here. Take a second to marvel at the views and appreciate the tower’s role in defending the small but mighty San Marino!

The Three Towers represent the defense of freedom, which has always been a core value for San Marino and has prevented it from being defeated.

What to do in San Marino

Visit The Basilica Di San Marino

The Basilica di San Marino is also known as the Church of San Marino, and is the main cathedral in the city and country. Most Sammarinese are Roman Catholic. This basilicia is dedicated to Saint Marinus, who is believed to be the founder of the country, and the patron saint. The basilica was built in the 19th century and is quite ornate. Be sure to visit and enjoy the frescoes and intricate carvings during your day trip from Florence to San Marino!

Public Palace Of The Republic Of San Marino

The Palazzo Pubblico is the town hall of the City of San Marino, and is also the country’s official government building. It is located in the heart of the city, in Freedom (or Liberty) Square, and was built around 1380.

Pro-tip: Liberty Square is another popular photo-op in the city! Don’t walk through it too quickly!

The Council Chamber on the upper floor is still in use! It holds 60 membes of parliament of the Titan, which has been meeting here actively since 1848.  You can visit the two floors of the building from 9-5 pm daily.

Pro-tip: There is a combined ticket to visit all of San Marino’s state museums and monuments. It costs 8 Euro. If you’d like the most “bang for your buck”, I recommend this affordable, private tour that will cover ALL of these sights, plus some!

State Museum Of San Marino

If you chose to purchase a combined ticket, this is one of the museums included with it. That is why I chose to visit. There are 3-4 floors to explore at the State Museum, all of which feature art and artifacts from the region, as well as relics from Ancient Egypt and the Renaissance period.

Where To Eat In San Marino

Now that I covered the must-see sights for your Florence to San Marino day trip, here are a few restaurant recommendations!

Caffe Titano / La Cremeria Del Titano

I couldn’t recommend this café more! I sat in here for a few hours to enjoy a sweet treat and cappuccino while I worked on my blog. They had a giant menu of desserts, including homemade ice cream. Be sure to include a stop here on your itinerary for an afternoon pick me up!

Ristorante Pizzeria Spingarda

This is where I ate lunch during my day trip from Florence to San Marino! This restaurant had incredible service and great views overlooking the surrounding countryside. They also had a large menu offering everything from local Sammarise dishes to pizza, pasta, salads, and more. I recommend eating here!

Those are all my recommendations for your day trip from Florence to San Marino! I hope this guide inspires you visit this charming and historic European hidden gem! Again, here is a separate guide covering how to GET to San Marino!
